Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Elections 2024: More than 70 percent of the 90 MLAs elected to the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly have declared their minimum educational qualification as graduation and three of them have a doctorate degree. According to data compiled by the NGO 'Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), all the three doctorate degree holders who won the recent assembly elections are leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Six BJP MLAs are graduates with professional degrees and four are postgraduates.

According to a PTI report, the National Conference (NC), which emerged as the single largest party in the elections with a total of 42 seats, has 16 graduates with professional degrees and five postgraduates in its legislative party. Eight BJP MLAs have declared 10th as their highest educational qualification, while the number of such MLAs in NC is just one. There are two BJP MLAs who have not cleared the lass 10 examination, while NC has one MLA in this category. Four BJP MLAs have cleared the lass 12 examinations, while the number of such MLAs in NC is six.

An overall analysis of the educational qualifications of the new assembly members shows that four MLAs have not cleared Class-10 exams, while nine are Class-10 pass. The highest educational qualification of a dozen MLAs is Class-12. 16 members of the first assembly of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir are graduates and 32 members are graduates with professional degrees, while 12 members have completed postgraduate degrees. The House also has three doctorate degree holders and two diploma holders.

ADR data also shows that out of 90 MLAs, nine have criminal cases against them, out of which eight MLAs are facing serious charges that carry a jail term of five or more years. Five of these MLAs belong to the National Conference, out of which four have serious charges, while two BJP MLAs also have serious criminal cases against them. The other two MLAs belong to the People's Democratic Party (PDP) and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). The number of MLAs facing criminal cases has increased this time. In the erstwhile state's 87-member assembly, only five MLAs had criminal cases registered against them, out of which two had serious charges.
