Kolkata: In a recent barbaric turn of events, a special court in the city found Sanjay Roy guilty of rape and murder of a doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Starting with the verdict, Anirban Das, the Additional District and Sessions Judge commented that there were grounds for Roy to be “punished” for his actions.
According to him, Roy was being held guilty under Sections 64 (rape), 66 (punishment for causing death),and 103(1) (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The sanctioned punishment under Section 103 of the Criminal Code is life imprisonment or death.
The judge expressed in the ruling why Roy deserves to be punished where he said, “You forcibly erected with the doctor. You strangulated her and pinched her mouth and in the end, she passed away due thanks to the injury." In case, do also read further to understand what Roy said to absolve himself of the guilt.
On the basis of these allegations, the following charges were duly brought before you as per sections 64, 66 and 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). On the basis of the statements of the witnesses and the documents produced in this matter, your guilt has been proved and you are being pronounced guilty,” the judge said.
Roy was further commented upon by the Judge that Roy’s plea would be given at 12:30h on Monday with judgement reserved after that.
He Was Not 'Alone': What Victims' Mother Said On Verdict
Following the judgement, the parents of the RG Kar victim thanked the court for enabling them to seek justice. In her father's words, “The faith and belief that we had in you, you have fulfilled it entirely.”
On the other hand, the mother of the victim, who is deceased said, “That Sanjay is guilty was proven by medical evidence. He was quiet throughout the hearings which established his involvement in the torture and murder of her daughter. However, he was not alone. People, who still need to be arrested, must be punished as well.”
She further stressed that the struggle for justice will not falter until their final breath.
