Today is World TB Day 2025, and this year’s theme highlights a global mission: “Yes, we can end TB – Commit, Invest, Deliver.” India continues to take strong action against tuberculosis (TB) through national programs that aim to eliminate the disease by the end of 2025.

Key efforts include free TB treatment, ₹1,000 monthly nutritional support for patients, digital health cards, and tech-based reminders to help ensure consistent medication.

Reduction in TB Cases, But Mission Still Far

Minister of State for Health Anupriya Patel recently reported in the Lok Sabha that there has been an 18% reduction in TB cases since 2015. Despite this progress, the goal of a TB-free India remains distant as new infections continue, often due to delayed diagnosis and drug-resistant TB strains.

How Dangerous is TB?

Tuberculosis is caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The bacteria can lie dormant for a long time and become active when immunity drops. Delays in identifying drug resistance make treatment harder and allow the infection to spread more easily.

Types of Tuberculosis

  • Pulmonary TB (Infectious) – Affects the lungs
  • Extra Pulmonary TB (Non-infectious) – Affects bones, uterus, and other body parts

Modes of Transmission:

  • Coughing
  • Sneezing
  • Droplet infection

6 Common Symptoms of Tuberculosis

  • Persistent dry cough
  • Blood in sputum
  • Chest pain
  • Tiredness or restlessness
  • Loss of appetite
  • Low-grade fever
