Numbness and pricking sensation in the feet is a common problem that many people experience at some point or the other. This problem can be temporary or can also be a sign of a serious health problem. Let us know from Dr. Sanjay Dhal (Senior Director – Internal Medicine, Max Super Specialty Hospital, Shalimar Bagh) why there is a feeling of numbness and pricking sensation in the feet?
Dr. Sanjay Dhal gave the reasons-
- 1. Obstruction in blood circulation – Sometimes sitting in the same position for a long time or sitting cross-legged puts pressure on the veins, which stops blood circulation. This causes the legs to become numb and there is a feeling of needle pricking.
- 2. Nerve damage or pressure – This problem can occur if there is excessive pressure on the nerves or they get damaged, such as due to slip disc, sciatica or any injury.
- 3. Diabetes – Nerve problems are common in people suffering from diabetes. This is called diabetic neuropathy. This can cause problems like numbness or burning in the feet.
- 4. Vitamin deficiency- This problem can also occur due to deficiency of vitamin B12 and E in the body. These vitamins help in keeping the nerves healthy.
- 5. Side effects of medicines – Long term use of some medicines can affect the nerves.
6. It can also be caused by excessive alcohol consumption, thyroid problems, swelling in the nerves or infection.
Prevention Tips–
- 1. Change position- Do not sit in the same position for a long time, stretch the body.
- 2. Take a balanced diet – Eat a diet rich in vitamins and minerals. Especially vitamin B12 and E.
- 3. Control diabetes- If you are suffering from diabetes, keep your blood sugar level under control.
- 4. Exercise- Do light exercise regularly, so that the blood circulation remains proper.
5. If this problem occurs repeatedly, contact a doctor immediately. This may be a sign of some serious disease.
Numbness and pins and needles sensation in the legs is common, but it should not be ignored. Consult a doctor at the right time and adopt a healthy lifestyle.
