London: Asma al-Assad: Syria's former first lady Asma al-Assad, who was once called the 'desert rose' in the Western media, has now filed a divorce case against her husband. Media reports are claiming that Asma al-Assad now wants to leave Russia, where her entire family is currently sheltered. Asma now wants to return to her birthplace Britain. But will Britain grant asylum to Asma Assad? This is the big question.
Asma Assad has cancer
49-year-old Asma is seeking to leave Russia because her leukemia 'cannot be adequately monitored in Moscow'. There are also reports of her 26-year-old marriage ending and divorce because she will not leave Russia for health reasons alone. The couple fled Damascus and sought refuge in Russia after Syrian rebels captured the capital on 8 December. And now Asma does not want to live in Russia.
Britain will not give asylum to Asma
The UK government confirmed that despite Asma being a British citizen, she cannot return to the UK due to the sanctions imposed against her by the UK government, reports the Daily Star. Foreign Secretary David Lammy insisted that she is 'not welcome here in the UK' due to the sanctions.
Conservative MP Robert Jenrick warned that Asma should not be allowed to return to Britain because the Assad family was responsible for some of the worst atrocities in modern times. If his wife returns to live a luxurious life in Britain, it would be an insult to millions of Assad's victims. Political analyst Stanislav Belkovsky warned that Asma's life in Moscow, Russia is in a golden cage. Life there is no longer satisfactory for Asma Assad. However, the Kremlin denied Turkish media claims that she is trying to leave her husband and seek asylum in Britain.
Let us tell you that Asma was born in 1975 to her Syrian cardiologist father Fawaz Akhras, who worked in Harley Street, and diplomat mother Sahar. Despite her parents' conservative Muslim background, Asma was educated at the secular Queens College in Marylebone, where her friends called her Emma.
