The latest case is from the country's financial capital Mumbai. This time a 78-year-old woman was cheated of Rs 1.5 crore. The cyber cell of Mumbai Police has started investigating the case. According to the Crime Branch, the scammers forced the woman to transfer this amount because the fraudster posing as a police officer told her that mephedrone drug and US dollars were found in her parcel. The woman had sent this courier to her daughter in America.

The goods were sent to the daughter by courier

In her complaint to the police, the elderly woman said that she had sent some food items to her daughter through courier. Police said that the woman, a relative of a builder in South Mumbai, was initially threatened by a 'courier firm employee' and later by 'police officers' on video calls on the pretext of taking legal action.

Fraudsters scared me first

The Indian Express quoted a police officer as saying, 'She opted for the courier service on December 5 and the next day she received a call from a man named Amit Kumar from the courier company. Amit claimed that the parcel contained expired passports, Aadhaar cards, credit cards, 2,000 grams of mephedrone and $2,000 in cash.' The fraudsters threatened to arrest the woman in a money laundering case and sent a fake arrest warrant and investigation report.

Police is investigating

The fraudsters forced the woman to share details of her bank accounts and got Rs 1.51 crore transferred from her. The woman lodged a complaint at the police helpline and later gave an application at the South Cyber ​​Police Station. The police have registered a case of extortion, cheating and criminal intimidation. An officer said, "We are trying to trace the culprits through bank account details and call data records."
