U.S. President Donald Trump referred to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a "very intelligent person" and a "good friend," while expressing optimism over trade discussions between the two countries. His remarks come amid ongoing criticism of India's high tariffs on American products.
Speaking from the White House, Trump said, "Prime Minister Modi was here recently and we have always been very good friends. India is one of the countries that charges the highest tariffs in the world. It’s cruel."
Despite the sharp comments on trade practices, Trump maintained a positive personal note: "They are very smart. He (Modi) is a very intelligent man and a very good friend of mine. We had a very good conversation. I think everything will be great between India and our country. And I want to say you have a great Prime Minister."
New U.S. Tariff Measures Effective from April 2
Prime Minister Modi visited Washington, D.C. in February, shortly after beginning his second term in office, to hold bilateral talks with President Trump. During the visit, trade relations and tariff issues were discussed in detail.
Trump confirmed that new tariffs aimed at countries that impose high duties on U.S. goods will be implemented starting April 2. This move underscores his administration’s firm stance on achieving fair trade terms.
