One person died and about 20 others were rescued after a tourist boat capsized in the Arabian Sea near Calangute beach in North Goa on Wednesday (25 December), police said. According to the police, the incident took place around 1.30 pm.
The person who died in the accident was a 54-year-old man. Police said that all the rescued people were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. A senior police officer said, "A 54-year-old man died after the boat in which they were travelling capsized and 20 others were rescued and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment." He further said that all the passengers, including a six-year-old child and women, were wearing life jackets except two.
13 members of a family were on board
The passengers on board the boat included 13 members of a family from Khed in Maharashtra. According to officials, a worker of Drishti Marine rushed to help and called for backup after seeing the boat capsize. A spokesperson for Drishti Marine, a government-appointed lifeguard agency, said that soon after the incident, 18 on-duty lifeguards rushed to the aid of the struggling passengers and brought them safely to the shore.
He said that out of the 20 passengers, two children aged six and seven years and two women aged 25 and 55 years were in good condition and were admitted to the hospital. He said that two passengers on the boat were not wearing life jackets. Goa is a popular tourist destination, especially during Christmas and New Year celebrations.
