Rahul Gandhi Met Hathras Gangrape victim's Family: Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Thursday visited Hathras to meet the family of the 2020 gangrape victim. After the meeting, Gandhi criticised the BJP government for failing to fulfil promises made to the family and accused officials of misbehaving with them.
The horrific gangrape of a 19-year-old Dalit teenager in September 2020 drew national attention and sparked protests and criticism over the way the police handled the case. The woman was allegedly abducted and gangraped on September 14. Reports suggest that she was brutalised to the extent that her tongue was cut off. She succumbed to her injuries on September 29, 2020.
Why did Rahul speak after the meeting?
"The things he told me during the meeting shocked me," Gandhi said in a post on Instagram. He alleged that the family was under constant surveillance, with guns and cameras keeping watch on them all the time. The Congress MP further claimed that promises made to the family, including government jobs and transfers, were not fulfilled. "Instead of giving justice to the victim's family, the government is committing various atrocities on them," he said. He said the accused in the case were living freely.
Gandhi claimed that the condition of the family is a reflection of the way Dalits are treated under the BJP rule. He vowed to fight for the family, saying, "We will not let this family be forced to live in this condition. We will fight with all our might to get them justice." After Gandhi's visit, former Hathras Congress chief Chandragupta Vikramaditya told the media, "Rahul Gandhi has a relationship with this family. He has always stood by them and will continue to do so. Today he came to listen to their problems. He is constantly fighting for their problems."
