
America Accident: New Year's Eve celebrations in the heart of the French Quarter of New Orleans turned into a horrific scene on Wednesday morning. A pickup truck rammed into a crowd of people reveling on Bourbon Street. 10 people died and 30 were injured in the accident. The incident is being investigated by the FBI and local police.
The tragedy unfolded at around 3.15am, when the city's famous street was still bustling with New Year's Eve celebrations. People present at the scene said the truck crossed a barricade and collided with a group of people on the pavement.
People told a painful story
Kevin Garcia, 22, was at the scene of the accident. He said, "I saw a truck hit everyone on the left side of the Bourbon sidewalk. A body came flying towards me," he said, adding that he heard gunfire immediately after the accident.
One man said, "We heard gunfire, saw the police running in that direction," said Nicole Mowrer, who was with her husband, Jim, when the truck crashed into the crowd. They stayed in a nearby closet until the firing stopped, then went out into the street, where they encountered several wounded victims."
As chaos broke out, police quickly took control of the area, urging people to leave as quickly as possible and advising them to put their phones away. "When they finally let us out of the club, the police pointed out where we had to walk and told us to get out of the area quickly," said witness Whit Davis, 22, of Shreveport, Louisiana.
