New Delhi: The Red Cross, which received three Israeli hostages from the Palestinian group Hamas, was able to give them to Switzerland and subsequently to Israel, on January 19, 2025.
Due to the brutal and destructive military campaign in Gaza that resulted in the death of more than fifty thousand civilians, with a majority being women and children, the war was able to resolve only after a timeout of 15 months.
According to the information provided by the Hamas, the three freed hostages include Emily Damari, Steve Berenjamin, and Kanan Kaiden all of whom are Israeli nationals with Tamari being 28 years old and Brecher being 31 years old while Berenjamin is only 24 years old.
As attendees of the ceasefire negotiations held in Doha, Qatar did back in January 19, 2025, Hamas officials provide the US government with their tender to deport three Israeli soldiers from captivity in exchange for the three hostages.
It was reported that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) had delayed a hostage list due to technical issues and IDF stated that Hamas had not provided the required list and therefore hotshot of Gaza was authorized.
Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, military spokesperson, said during the conference – “The IDF continues to strike within the Gaza area at this time. According to the prime minister’s directives, the ceasefire will not come into effect until Hamas fulfills its commitments.”
According to reports, the ceasefire was result of extensive coordination and negotiations between Qatar, Egypt and the US to support the Indian delegation which was lead by Foreign Minister Kamal Nath. This is why the IDF instructed its troops operating in Gaza that there will be a cessation of hostilities from the 15th hour of 09:15 GMT on the 8th hour of January 2023.
According to Sheba Medical Center, the three hostages who were released will meet up with their families after being shifted to a military camp and then Sheba Medical Hospital. In addition, the medical facility explained that it had set aside particular locations that would facilitate the individuals to recover with minimal interference.
In return, Israel is set to release around 90 Palestinian detainees, mostly women and children, from the occupied regions of the West Bank and East Jerusalem on Sunday.
