Taipei: The ongoing tension between China and Taiwan continues to escalate, with China intensifying military drills near the island. Recently, Taiwan has strongly objected to these exercises, particularly those taking place along its southwestern coast. On Thursday, Taiwan condemned China’s actions, emphasizing the strategic importance of this region for its military infrastructure.
China’s Growing Military Presence
Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry issued a strong statement, declaring, “China is the biggest threat to regional peace and stability. It remains the primary destabilizing force in the Taiwan Strait and the broader Indo-Pacific region.”
Taiwan’s Defense Ministry reported that within a span of 24 hours, it detected a significant Chinese military presence—45 aircraft, 14 naval vessels, and a Chinese military ship operating near the island. Of these, 34 aircraft entered Taiwan’s airspace and waters. While Taiwan did not disclose specific countermeasures, it confirmed that an appropriate response was taken.
Taiwan Responds to Chinese Incursion
In another development earlier this week, Taiwan reported that four Chinese coast guard vessels entered its waters near Kinmen Island. In response, Taiwan deployed its own boats to drive them away.
Meanwhile, China’s state-run news agency Xinhua reported that during an annual meeting on Taiwan affairs, senior Chinese official Wang Huning urged China to take decisive steps toward “cross-strait integration” and strengthen its control over Taiwan.
China’s Military Agenda
China has officially designated an area off Taiwan’s southwest coast for live-fire military exercises, reinforcing its claim over the self-governed island. Beijing considers Taiwan a breakaway province and has repeatedly asserted that it could use force, if necessary, to reclaim it. In recent years, China has ramped up its military activities around Taiwan’s airspace and waters, raising concerns about escalating conflict in the region.
