After nearly two years of intense conflict, Sudan’s army has recaptured the Republican Palace in Khartoum, previously held by the rival paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF). This development marks a significant military victory for the army and indicates a weakening of the RSF’s position in the capital.

Location and Significance of the Republican Palace

The Republican Palace, situated on the banks of the Nile River, served as the government headquarters before Sudan's internal conflict began in April 2023. Following a military coup, control of the palace shifted to the RSF, led by General Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo.

For nearly two years, the palace remained one of the RSF’s main strongholds in Khartoum—until its recapture by the Sudanese army, led by General Abdel-Fattah Burhan.

Ongoing Civil War and Humanitarian Crisis

The civil war, which erupted in 2023, continues to devastate Sudan. Despite the army’s recent gains, including the reclaiming of the Republican Palace, the RSF still controls large parts of the country and has not acknowledged defeat.

Key Impacts of the War:

  • Over 28,000 deaths reported since April 2023
  • Millions displaced, with many families living in extreme conditions
  • Reports of famine, with some citizens forced to eat grass to survive

What the Recapture Means

The Sudanese army’s control of the Republican Palace marks a turning point in the battle for Khartoum, potentially shifting the balance of power. However, experts caution that the conflict is far from over, as RSF strongholds remain in other regions of Sudan.
