Karnal: A 70-year-old couple in Karnal, Haryana decided to end their 44-year-old marriage. The legal battle lasted for 18 years. The husband has paid a whopping sum of Rs 3.07 crore as permanent alimony. According to reports, he even sold his farm to fulfill the settlement.
According to a report in Times of India, the couple got married on August 27, 1980 and have three children. Two daughters and a son. However, after a few years, their relationship turned sour and they started living separately in 2006.
Divorce due to mental cruelty?
After this, the husband filed a petition for divorce in the Family Court of Karnal on the ground of mental cruelty, but his petition was rejected.
Appeal in 2013
In 2013, they filed an appeal in the High Court seeking divorce. The case remained pending for 11 years and the High Court finally referred the case to the Mediation and Conciliation Centre in November this year for the possibility of settlement.
During the mediation proceedings, the wife, husband and their three children agreed to end the marriage with the husband paying Rs 3.07 crore as permanent alimony.
Sold land and crops to pay living allowance
The husband sold parts of his land and paid Rs 2,16 crore through demand draft and Rs 50 lakh in cash after selling his sugarcane crop. However, the court said that with the payment, the children and wife will have no claim of any kind against him. The court said, “Even after the death of the first party, the second and third parties (children) will not have any claim on the property which may be left by the first party at the time of his death.
