One Nation, One Election: The uproar of opposition MPs continues in the House for one country, one election. Amidst all this, there is news that four MPs including party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra may join the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) to be formed to consider the bill containing the provision of one country, one election. Quoting sources, news agency PTI said that the party may send the names of Priyanka Gandhi, Manish Tiwari and Sukhdev Bhagat from Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha member Randeep Surjewala for the JPC.
The bill was introduced by the Law Minister
Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal introduced the 'Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill, 2024' and the related 'Union Territory Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024', which provides for simultaneous Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in the country, in the lower house, which was strongly opposed by the opposition parties. The bill was introduced after a division of votes in the House. 263 votes were cast in favor of introducing the bill, while 198 votes were cast against it. After this, Meghwal also introduced the 'Union Territory Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024' after the consent of the House by voice vote.
Priyanka called it 'anti-constitutional'
Let us tell you that Priyanka Gandhi Vadra had termed the bills as 'anti-constitutional'. She had said, 'This is against the federalism of our country. We are opposing this bill.' Meanwhile, Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) has proposed the names of Lok Sabha member Kalyan Banerjee and Rajya Sabha member Saket Gokhale for the proposed panel. After a heated debate between the opposition and the central government, two bills providing for simultaneous elections were introduced in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.
The Congress-led opposition called the bill 'anti-constitutional'. Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal made it clear that this law will not interfere with the powers of the states. Amid the uproar, Union Home Minister Amit Shah told the Lok Sabha that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has told the Cabinet that the bill will be sent to the Joint Parliamentary Committee.
Who was in favor and who was against?
The bill was introduced after division of votes. 263 votes were cast in favour of introducing the bill and 198 against it. Opposition parties Congress, DMK, Trinamool Congress (TMC), Samajwadi Party, NCP-SP, Shiv Sena-UBT and AIMIM objected to the introduction of the bill.
This bill to conduct simultaneous Lok Sabha and assembly elections was introduced by a committee headed by former President Ram Nath Kovind after a few months of consultations with political parties. 32 political parties supported it, while 15 opposed it. Amit Shah said in the House, 'There can be a detailed discussion in the JPC.
