Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Sri Lanka in April 2025, with expectations of signing multiple significant agreements. The visit will focus on finalizing deals made during Sri Lankan President Anura Kumar Dissanayake’s trip to New Delhi last year.

Strengthening India-Sri Lanka Bilateral Relations

Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath confirmed this development while discussing budget allocations in Parliament. He emphasized that Sri Lanka shares strong diplomatic ties with India, stating:

"Our first diplomatic visit was to India, where we signed multiple agreements for bilateral cooperation. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will arrive here in early April."

During the visit, several new Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) will be signed, along with the inauguration of the Sampur Solar Power Station.

Key Agreements Between India and Sri Lanka

India and Sri Lanka have collaborated on multiple major infrastructure projects, reinforcing their strategic partnership. One of the most notable projects includes:

  • 135 MW Solar Power Plant in Sampur, Trincomalee, a joint initiative between Sri Lanka’s Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) and India’s NTPC.
  • Additional projects in energy, trade, and security sectors are expected to be formalized.

India’s Growing Importance in Sri Lanka’s Foreign Policy

Foreign Minister Herath reiterated that Sri Lanka follows a neutral foreign policy, prioritizing national interests while maintaining diplomatic relationships with all global partners.

This will be Prime Minister Modi’s fourth visit to Sri Lanka since 2015, reflecting India’s commitment to strengthening ties with its neighboring nation.
