Kathmandu: Nepal’s Foreign Minister, Arju Rana Deuba, faced unexpected travel trouble while returning to Kathmandu from a United Nations meeting. Instead of landing in Nepal’s capital, her flight was unexpectedly diverted to Kolkata, India.
Deuba was on a Qatar Airways flight from Doha to Kathmandu when adverse weather conditions forced a change in course. On Friday, heavy clouds and reduced visibility at Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport made it unsafe to land, prompting authorities to reroute the flight to India.
Officials confirmed that the 63-year-old minister, who was returning from a UN meeting in Geneva, landed safely in Kolkata after the diversion. Tribhuvan International Airport sources cited a western low-pressure system as the cause of the poor weather, leading to light rainfall and reduced visibility in the Kathmandu Valley.
Deuba to Return When Weather Improves
An airport official in Kathmandu stated, "The flight was diverted to Kolkata due to bad weather. Once conditions improve, the Qatar Airways flight will return to Nepal."
While details about other passengers on board remain unclear, authorities assured that the decision to reroute was made with safety as the top priority. Now, Deuba will travel back to Kathmandu once the weather conditions are deemed suitable for landing.
