Cape Town: A large wildfire has broken out on the slopes of Table Mountain in South Africa, prompting a major firefighting operation. Over 100 firefighters have been deployed to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading further into Cape Town, according to national park officials.

Firefighting Efforts in Full Swing

South African National Parks, which oversees Table Mountain, has mobilized four helicopters, two planes, and 115 firefighters to tackle the fire. While authorities have managed to bring the situation under partial control, strong winds have made firefighting efforts more challenging. The fire began on Sunday at the top of Table Mountain and quickly spread down the slopes due to gusty winds.

Fire Risk High During Dry Season

The region experiences hot and dry conditions from December to April, making wildfires a frequent occurrence. Strong coastal winds often fuel the flames, increasing the risk of rapid spread. Meanwhile, Cape Town is currently hosting a meeting of G20 finance ministers and central bank governors, but officials have confirmed that the fire does not pose a threat to the event.

Reminder of the 2021 Disaster

This fire brings back memories of the devastating 2021 blaze, which ravaged parts of Table Mountain, destroyed historic buildings at the University of Cape Town, and forced evacuations. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported in the current fire. Authorities have assured that firefighters will remain on duty overnight, as strong winds could reignite the flames.
