South Korea Plane Crash: A plane carrying 181 people crashed in South Korea on Sunday. 179 people are feared dead. Officials have so far confirmed the death of 94 people in the accident. The plane went off the runway during landing, leading to this major accident.
The Jeju Air plane, carrying 175 passengers and six flight attendants, was returning from Bangkok, Thailand and the accident occurred while landing, Reuters reported on Sunday, citing Yonhap news agency. The emergency office said rescue officials were trying to evacuate passengers from the plane after the fire was extinguished.
The plane belonged to Jeju Air
Local TV stations broadcast footage showing a thick plume of black smoke billowing from the fire-engulfed plane. The plane belonged to Jeju Air and was a Boeing 737-800. Yonhap news agency reported that the plane veered off the runway and collided with a fence due to a landing gear malfunction.
The plane crash happened in Kazakhstan on Wednesday
Emergency officials said they were investigating the exact cause of the fire. Video photos showed the plane landing without opening its landing gear and eventually exploding. The incident comes after the Azerbaijan Airlines plane crash near Aktau, Kazakhstan last Wednesday, in which 38 of the 67 people on board were killed and all others were injured.
Azerbaijan Airlines flight J2-8243 from Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, flew hundreds of miles off its scheduled route to Grozny in Russia's southern Chechnya region and crashed on the opposite coast of the Caspian Sea about 3 km (1.8 mi) from Aktau, Kazakhstan. It is not known why the plane went hundreds of miles off course into the Caspian Sea, however, earlier reports said it was diverted due to fog.
