Balasore (Odisha): Natasha Das and Luke De did not consider marriage on their initial meeting in London. However, two years later, both Natasha, who lives in Balasore, Odisha, and Luke, a citizen of the UK, understood that they were perfect for one another and were willing to exchange vows. Henceforth, their parents, both the groom’s and the bride’s, accepted to officiate the marriage with Hindu rites and traditions.

The marriage resulted from love, and as a result, not only Indian geography was embraced, but Indian culture as well. The daughter of Kamalakant and Meenakshi Das of Sobharampur in Balasore, Natasha, met Luke, a telecom professional, when she was working there. Their friendship blossomed into romance and after two years, they chose to get married. They just needed to sort out one hurdle and that was parental consent which for some odd reason seemed to astonish both sides.

After Natasha and Luke’s parents came to a mutual understanding, the rest was simply history.

Both of them first appeared at the Balasore court before the out of town wedding to register the marriage. Later, on Wednesday, Luke arrived at Sobharampur where he was already in the groom's outfit and got ready to Indian rituals. Seeing him dance during the marriage procession in an open vehicle was a wonderful sight. Vedic wedding with chanting and all rituals was conducted in a grand setting. From 'hastaganthi' (the most important rite at the wedding when the bride’s and groom’s arms are tied with flowers while shlokas are gushed out) to 'sindoor daan' (where the groom pours vermillion in the bride's hair parting), every single ceremony was conducted enthusiastically.

Luke, however, is originally from London, but has Indian descent because his father Anthony De, is a Goan. Post-marriage with a British citizen Geraldine, he shifted to London.

Kamalakant Das, Natasha’s father says, “what is destined will certainly happen,” with a lot of emotion. “We were initially surprised when our daughter told us about Luke. But after knowing about his Indian roots, we had no problems in accepting him. It is heartening to see how Luke respects our traditions, and that is important to us.”

He explained how Natasha went to London to do her MBA five years ago and post her studies, she was able to secure employment there.

Speaking on this, Meenakshi Das claimed that Natasha and Luke make a good pair since both admire each other’s families and deeply abide by family values. “My daughter will be staying abroad, but importantly she embraces our culture. She also said that I should get her a Tulsi sapling so that she can keep our traditions alive in London,” she said.

Natasha mentioned her wedding was the most fairy-tale event. “I met my husband at a coffee shop, and after getting to know each other, it was clear that we wanted to live with each other for the rest of our lives. Now as we are married, I am with my family, who are all Hindu, and I thank them for performing all the rituals. Even in London, I make it a point to celebrate all of the our holidays, and I will make sure to keep doing that,” she stated.

Equally pleased, Luke summarized that he has his family in India as well. “I cherish Natasha and her family. That’s why, getting married to her in her town to respect her culture, was a must. Even though my parents could not come here, they blessed me. We will start our married life in London, but we will always be Indians at heart.”
