One more child among those rescued during the fire in the NICU of Maharani Laxmi Bai Medical College in Jhansi died during treatment. This has increased the number of newborns who died in the fire to 11. Jhansi District Magistrate Avinash Kumar had said that 38 newborns rescued in the accident are being treated. Kumar told news agency 'PTI-Bhasha' that the condition of three newborns was said to be critical, out of which one newborn died during treatment on Sunday. The number of dead newborns has increased to 11.

However, the District Magistrate clarified that the child did not die due to burns. He also said that none of the children who are being treated have burn injuries. He said that these were the children who were saved by the hospital staff. Kumar said that the condition of the children admitted to NICU is critical.

The District Magistrate also told the media that he inspected the medical college on Sunday. He also enquired about the condition of the children admitted to the PICU and also talked to their families. He said, I have spoken to the doctors and the condition of the children is stable.

 

Kumar said, the bodies of the 10 dead children have been handed over to their families. One child was with us and one family was claiming the child. Since verification could not be done yesterday, verification was done today. After verification, the child was handed over to the family claiming him, now no child is missing.

A four-member team will investigate the matter.

Parthasarathi Sen Sharma, Principal Secretary of UP's Medical Health, Family Welfare, and Medical Education Department, issued a notification to form a four-member inquiry committee into this incident. According to the notification, the committee formed to investigate the fire incident at Jhansi Medical College will investigate on three points. The committee has been entrusted with the responsibility of identifying the primary cause, any kind of negligence or fault, and making recommendations to prevent such incidents in the future. The inquiry committee has been asked to provide its investigation report to the government within a week.
