Pakistan’s National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq has convened a Parliamentary Committee on National Security meeting to address the worsening security situation in the country. The closed-door session will take place on Tuesday at 1:30 PM in the Parliament House, following instructions from Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif. The meeting comes in response to recent terrorist attacks in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces, which have raised serious concerns about national security.
Pakistan Army to Brief Parliamentary Committee
According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), top Pakistani military officials will present a comprehensive security briefing to the parliamentary committee. The discussion will cover recent terrorist attacks and the current security situation in the country. Given the proximity of these provinces to Afghanistan, concerns about cross-border terrorism will also be addressed.
Who Will Attend the Meeting?
Since there is no designated Parliamentary Committee on National Security, members of the Standing Committees on Defence and Foreign Affairs have been invited. Additionally, the federal cabinet, chief ministers of all four provinces, and leaders of all parliamentary parties (or their representatives) will participate. Both Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Army Chief General Asim Munir will be present, underscoring the significance of the discussions.
Government Plans Crackdown on BLA and Other Militant Groups
A report by Dawn suggests that the Pakistani government is preparing for a major counter-terrorism operation against the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and other militant organizations responsible for increased terror attacks in Balochistan. Security analysts believe that the Pakistani military may initiate targeted operations to dismantle these groups.
BLA's Deadly Attack on Jaffar Express
The urgency of the security meeting follows the March 11 ambush on the Jaffar Express, a passenger train carrying 440 people near the hilly areas of Gudalar and Piru Kunri in Balochistan. The Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) killed 21 passengers and four paramilitary personnel before Pakistani security forces eliminated all 33 attackers on March 12.
Terrorist Attacks in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province also witnessed five separate terrorist incidents on Sunday, resulting in the deaths of three security personnel. The province has seen a surge in terrorist activities, raising concerns about the effectiveness of current counter-terrorism measures.
