During the BIMSTEC summit held in Bangkok, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Advisor to Bangladesh's interim government. This was their first meeting since Yunus assumed the role after the political transition in Bangladesh in August last year. The 40-minute discussion focused on bilateral issues, regional stability, and the safety of minorities, including Hindus, in Bangladesh.
Prime Minister Modi conveyed India’s concerns about the recent rise in incidents targeting minority communities. He emphasized that ensuring the safety and rights of these groups is a fundamental responsibility of the Bangladeshi government. Modi also warned against any political rhetoric or actions that could damage the regional atmosphere.
Support for a Democratic and Inclusive Bangladesh
PM Modi reiterated India’s long-standing support for a stable, peaceful, and democratic Bangladesh. He highlighted India’s interest in fostering strong bilateral ties rooted in mutual respect and practical cooperation. The discussion also covered efforts to prevent illegal cross-border activities, especially at night, which remain a key security issue.
Muhammad Yunus raised topics related to the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and border-related incidents. India responded cautiously, with Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stating that a formal request had been made, but further comment was withheld.
Presence of Senior Indian Officials
India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval were present during the meeting. Prime Minister Modi stressed the importance of following legal frameworks to manage border issues and reiterated that cooperation in such areas strengthens bilateral security.
Official Statements and Public Communication
Following the meeting, Prime Minister Modi shared a post on social media platform 'X', stating:
“Met Mr. Muhammad Yunus, Chief Advisor to the Interim Government of Bangladesh. India is committed to constructive and people-centric relations with Bangladesh.”
He also reaffirmed India’s expectations that the Bangladeshi government would take strong action to protect minorities and investigate any attacks or discrimination thoroughly.
India’s Constructive Outlook Toward Bilateral Relations
Foreign Secretary Misri mentioned that PM Modi expressed India’s intent to maintain a pragmatic, constructive approach to India-Bangladesh relations. He emphasized that the relationship between the two nations should continue to be guided by shared interests and people-centered development.
Yunus Presents Photograph to Modi
After the meeting, a photograph shared by Yunus’s official account showed him presenting a framed photo to Prime Minister Modi. The image was taken during the 102nd Indian Science Congress on January 3, 2015, where Modi had presented a gold medal to Professor Yunus.
Strengthening BIMSTEC and Regional Ties
Prime Minister Modi congratulated Yunus on Bangladesh assuming the chairmanship of BIMSTEC and expressed confidence in his leadership to drive regional cooperation. Both leaders agreed to deepen engagement within the BIMSTEC framework, addressing shared challenges and advancing integration in the Bay of Bengal region.
