Legal News: The Bombay High Court on Tuesday (October 1) upheld the death sentence of Sunil Ram Kuchkorvi, a resident of Kolhapur. He was found guilty of killing his mother in 2017 and trying to cook her body parts. The bench of Justices Revati Mohite-Dere and Prithviraj Chavan delivered the verdict. The case has been described as a case of cannibalism and barbarism. The court also said that there is no scope for improvement in this case.
Kuchkoravi, who was sentenced to death by a Kolhapur court in 2021, appeared via video conference from Yerwada jail and the court confirmed the verdict. Justice Chavan remarked, 'This case falls under the rarest of the rare as he not only killed his mother but he also removed her body parts and was going to cook her heart and eat the ribs by putting them in oil. This is cannibalism and hence falls under the rarest of the rare cases.

Justice Dere emphasized the brutality of the crime and said, "We have not seen a more gruesome and barbaric case than this." The court also expressed concern that if Kuchkorvi is sentenced to life imprisonment, he will become a threat to other prisoners. The murder, which took place on August 28, 2017, sent shockwaves across the state. According to the prosecution, Kuchkorvi killed his 63-year-old mother, Yallama Rama Kuchkorvi, then mutilated her body and tried to cook some of her organs.
Defense lawyers Yug Mohit Choudhary and Payoshi Roy argued that the state should have considered the convict's background, mental health, and socio-economic conditions as mitigating factors. They suggested that Kuchkorvi should be allowed to present evidence of any possible mental illness or unstable behavior. The court then sought a psychological and psychiatric evaluation of the accused. On Tuesday, the High Court upheld the death sentence awarded to Kuchkorvi.
