In a fresh escalation in Yemen, Houthi rebels claim to have shot down a US MQ-9 Reaper drone over Marib province, a key oil and gas hub still controlled by forces aligned with Yemen’s exiled government.
Houthi military spokesperson Brigadier General Yahya Sari confirmed the attack in a pre-recorded video, stating the drone was targeted using a locally developed missile. Footage circulating on social media shows what appears to be flames and smoke following the alleged impact.
The US military, while acknowledging awareness of the reports, has refrained from commenting further. The Pentagon has not yet officially confirmed the incident.
President Trump Issues Warning to Houthis and Iran
US President Donald Trump responded swiftly to the Houthi claims via his platform Truth Social, reiterating that US operations against Houthi targets will continue “day and night” until maritime security is fully restored in the region.
“Many Houthi fighters and leaders have been killed. We will continue attacking the Houthis to ensure sea routes remain safe and free,” Trump stated, also warning Iran, widely considered the Houthis’ primary backer, against further escalation.
Strategic Importance of Marib Province
Marib, the site of the reported drone strike, is a crucial region due to its vast oil and gas reserves. It has remained under the control of pro-government forces despite repeated Houthi offensives in recent years.
Capabilities of the MQ-9 Reaper Drone
The MQ-9 Reaper is a versatile, long-range unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) classified by the US as a “hunter-killer” drone. It is equipped with air-to-ground missiles and advanced surveillance systems. Operated remotely, it plays a dual role in both reconnaissance and precision strike missions.
Its stealth capabilities allow it to operate undetected over hostile territory, making it a key asset in US military operations across conflict zones.
