Los Angeles is suffering a great catastrophe, and no it is not the fire, but the Grammy Awards: the most prestigious American music award. Everything regarding music and the musicians is alright, but in terms of red carpet fashion, it is a complete disaster. The Grammy Awards has a strong history of innovating, but this year, it felt like it shredded the entire envelope. Bizarrely clad celebrities transformed the red carpet into a stage with strange performances with bold and mostly scandalous and confusing decisions that left numerous fans uneasy.
Making a controversial statement
To the artists, trying to make any kind of statement was likely an intention. For example, Bianca Censori put on a dramatic showing that made her fashion mantra clear in an overly aggressive manner - less is more, but none is best. The wife of Kanye West made a shocking impression in a voluminous black faux fur coat that reached her feet. Bianca would later take off the coat to showcase her stocking dress that was barely visible. Not surprisingly, Bianca was asked to leave the venue.
Kanye defended his wife on Instagram by saying, “We beat the Grammys.” In one of his posts, the rapper stated, “For clarity: February 4th 2025 my wife is the most googled person on the planet called earth. (sic)” Following the Grammy ceremonies in 2025, he also posted a picture of himself with Bianca while saying, “Me and my wife are the most googled people on the planet. (sic).”
Joy Villa got out of the car wearing a red cap to compliment a golden full-length strappy bodycon dress. An immigrant from Trump’s ardent supporters, she completed the outfit with a massive dog necklace that resembled Elon Musk’s recently launched cryptocurrency, Dogecoin. While wearing a cap that suited the dress, she paired it with a massive dog necklace.
Exaggerated concepts
A recording assistant in Los Angeles, Markos D1, on the other hand, came wearing a diamond light snake necklace with a cap that let everyone know he's off the fashion charts. Actress and model Julia Fox wore an almost naked sheer black dress that was borderline indecent, paired it with cleaning gloves and somehow looked like she was headed for the Grammys after doing some cooking.

Similarly, the Smith siblings went out of their way to ensure they stood out as the most bizarre in costume ideas for a Halloween party. A black bathing suit with garments strewn all over the itsy bitsy for Willow appeared to be the best thing ever. On the opposite side, Jaden Smith came in a black suit with a child’s creepy dollhouse Wednesday Addams on top of his head which seemed to be in poor taste. However, for Indian users of social media, his dress up avatar was a fulfillment of a Hindi phrase, “Bachche ne poora ghar sar pe utha rakha hai”. J French the rapper, who is a local Chicago rapper said on social media Jaden looked ‘retarded’.

Stretching the boundaries of fashion at The Grammies was Adhiraj Singh, who arguably outdid himself this year. He styled Jaden Smith, who is notoriously known for wacky outfits, airy smock dress along with an Addams family ‘witch doll’ as headwear. Smith donned this look at ‘The 67th Annual Grammy Award’ event and the new age ‘Gryffindor’ belt completed his addition to the ensemble.
Cynthia Erivo stuns on the red carpet in a navy dress with a cut out detail at the bodice silver detail and her signature sculpted nails that were the show. “I feel like the nails are also a hint,” she said to the attendant’s microphone while showcasing her manicure. “What do you see there? Moon and stars. These sculptures resemble symbolism that can be witnessed on a streamer all around the globe. There is no moon and stars, only ‘Fly me to the moon’.”
At The Gramies, fashion has always celebrated outlandish creativity, however, this particular year, celebrated the bizarre. This was a concept that fashion designer and stylist Dhara Prajapati stood by when referring to her statement on the trench, “There’s a point when form becomes so strong that it is incomprehensible. It’s a balancing act.” The premise was lost at The Grammies, clearly with what the designer was trying to achieve. The costumes were impressive, but they crafted so much over that intellect that shows why it was created.

Opinions on social media seem divided. While some praised the confidence, others tore into the artists saying they were simply trying to seek attention and being weird. According to fashion critics, the outfits had no business being worn outside of a live performance, many of them were more suited for museums than for an actual event.
Expanding Horizons
These daring decisions do lean more towards the latter and removing them completely is detrimental. For numerous performers, the Grammys serve the purpose of showcasing their artistic abilities beyond their music. It is also a means for them to showcase and speak out in an unapologetically bold manner.
