Former PM Manmohan Singh death: Heart bypass surgery, also known as coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), is a treatment for a serious heart disease. Former Prime Minister of India Dr. Manmohan Singh also underwent such surgery. He underwent bypass surgery in the year 2009. According to the report, several blockages were detected in the Prime Minister's heart. He also underwent bypass surgery in 1990 and angioplasty for stent implantation in 2003. Let us know about this from Dr. Bimal Chhajer (Former Consultant - at AIIMS and director of Saaol Heart Center, New Delhi).
What is heart bypass surgery?
Dr. Bimal Chhajer explained that heart bypass surgery is performed when the blood vessels (arteries) of the heart become blocked. These blood vessels provide oxygen and nutrition to the heart. The cause of blockage is mostly cholesterol accumulation or narrowing of the arteries. When the blockage increases, it becomes difficult for blood to reach the heart, which increases the risk of heart attack.
In surgery, a vein or artery is taken from another part of the body, such as the leg or chest, and the blockage is bypassed. This new route allows blood to flow to the heart.
If not treated in time, coronary artery disease (CAD) can be fatal. It weakens the heart muscles and can lead to heart failure. Heart bypass surgery reduces the risk, but lifestyle changes are very important after that.
- Infection – There may be a risk of infection after surgery.
- Formation of clot – This clot can reach the lungs or brain and cause further problems.
- Abnormal heartbeat – This problem is seen after surgery.
How to take care after surgery-
- Eat a healthy diet – eat fruit, vegetables, and low-fat foods
- Exercise – Do light exercises as advised by your doctor
- Avoid smoking and alcohol – these habits can harm heart health
- Use medicines correctly. Take all medicines prescribed by the doctor on time.
Dr. Manmohan Singh's life is an example of the fact that one can live a healthy and active life even after heart bypass surgery. Therefore, if you feel any problem, consult a doctor immediately.
