Diabetes is a disease that imbalances the blood sugar level in the body. Dr. Geeta Shroff (Director of Nubella Center for Women's Health, New Delhi) said that people often think that diabetes occurs due to eating too much sugar, but in reality, diabetes does not occur only due to eating sugar, but it occurs due to the improper functioning of insulin in the body. Insulin is the hormone that controls sugar in the body. The cause of diabetes can also be genetics, wrong eating habits, and irregular lifestyle.

Dr. Geeta Shroff Jaggery is often considered better than sugar because it contains some natural elements that are good for health, but diabetes patients should also avoid eating jaggery. Although jaggery is not processed like sugar, it is also a type of sugar, which can increase blood sugar levels. Therefore, doctors advise diabetes patients to stay away from jaggery as well. If someone has a desire to eat sweets, then he can consume some natural sweeteners like fruits on the advice of the doctor.

What things should be avoided?

Diabetes patients should avoid certain things so that their blood sugar remains under control-

  • Sweet and processed foods: Stay away from sugar, jaggery, cakes, cookies, candies, and sweet beverages like cold drinks etc. They contain high amounts of sugar and can increase blood sugar immediately.
  • Fried and fatty foods: Diabetic patients should avoid fried and oily and spicy foods as these can hinder the control of blood sugar.
  • White flour: Foods made from white flour such as bread, biscuits, and pasta should be avoided. These foods are low in fiber and rich in carbohydrates, which increase sugar levels.
  • Dry Fruits: Some dry fruits like raisins and dates contain high amounts of natural sugar, so eat them in small quantities.

What to eat in diabetes?

Diabetes patients should include green vegetables, whole grains, oatmeal, and fiber-rich foods in their diet. Apart from this, it is also important to exercise regularly, drink plenty of water, and take medicines as per the doctor's advice. It is possible to keep diabetes under control if you pay attention to your diet and lifestyle.
