A 34-year-old woman named Wu, from Anhui province in eastern China, died after allegedly jumping from the roof of Anqing Municipal Hospital following a botched dental procedure. According to a report by South China Morning Post, Wu took the extreme step after suffering severe pain and emotional trauma due to a failed tooth extraction.
Doctor Extracted Wrong Tooth Without Anesthesia
Wu had visited Anqing Municipal Hospital—known for its dental department—for a tooth removal. However, the procedure took a tragic turn when the attending doctor mistakenly extracted a healthy tooth. Even more shockingly, the doctor attempted to forcefully reinsert the extracted tooth, using wire to bind it to her other teeth.
Wu’s brother revealed that no anesthesia was used for the first 90 minutes of the procedure, during which Wu endured excruciating pain. The incident left her unable to eat or sleep, surviving only on water for several days.
Victim Shared Her Ordeal on Social Media
Before her death, Wu shared a heartbreaking video online describing her ordeal. She said,
“No one really said anything about this incident. The hospital lied to me from start to finish, which caused me a lot of pain. Who will save me? I will die here because of the harm this hospital has caused.”
Family Accuses Hospital of Inaction and Demands Investigation
Wu’s relatives said she warned authorities multiple times and even threatened to die by suicide if no action was taken. Despite her repeated pleas, the hospital allegedly took no steps to address her complaint.
After Wu’s death, the hospital suspended the doctor involved. Health authorities and police have now launched an official investigation. Wu’s family has rejected the hospital’s offer of ¥100,000 (approximately ₹11.7 lakh) in compensation and demanded access to CCTV footage of the incident.
Pattern of Dental Negligence Cases in China
This is not an isolated case. In August 2024, a man named Huang reportedly died from a heart attack just two weeks after undergoing an intense dental procedure in which 23 teeth were removed and 12 implants installed in one day. The case came to light after his daughter posted about it on social media.
