Nipple Discharge Causes: Many of us women sometimes experience white discharge from the breast, which can cause concern. It is often heard that white discharge from the breast without pregnancy can be a sign of cancer. In such a situation, today in our article we will know from Dr. Aastha Dayal (Director - Obstetrics and Gynecology, CK Birla Hospital Gurugram) how much truth is there in this. Dr. Aastha Dayal said that this doesn't need to be a symptom of cancer. Discharge from the breast can happen due to many reasons, which can be both common and serious.
Common causes of discharge from the breast- (Breast White Discharge Causes in Hindi)
It can be normal to have white or any other type of discharge from the breasts without pregnancy. Sometimes it may be due to hormonal imbalance, side effects of medicines, or some other changes in the body. Some common causes are:
- Hormonal imbalance: A hormone called prolactin is responsible for milk production in women. If its level increases in the body, then white milk-like discharge can occur even without pregnancy.
- Side effects of medications: Some medications, such as contraceptive pills, anti-depressants, or hormonal treatments, can cause breast discharge.
- Infection or inflammation: Any infection or inflammation in the breast can also cause discharge. In this condition, pain or redness may also occur.
- Breast injury: Sometimes injury or pressure on the breast can also cause discharge.
Could this be a symptom of cancer?
Dr. Aastha said that white discharge from the breast is not a symptom of cancer. However, if along with the discharge, there are other symptoms like bleeding from the nipple, lump in the breast, change in the skin of the breast, or sunken nipple, then definitely visit the doctor.
When to see a doctor:
- If the discharge is persistent and is accompanied by other symptoms such as pain or a lump
- If the discharge is bloody or yellow-green in color
- If there are any unusual changes in the nipple or breast
Along with a physical examination of the breast, the doctor may recommend some tests such as –
- Mammography: To examine the inside of the breast using X-rays
- Ultrasound: To detect any lumps or abnormalities in the breast
- Ductography: If there is discharge from the nipple, your doctor may perform this test to check the milk ducts
If the cause of the discharge is hormonal imbalance or a side effect of medicines, the doctor may recommend hormonal therapy or a change in medicines for treatment. Antibiotics may be needed if there is an infection. White discharge from the breast without pregnancy is usually not serious, but it is also not right to ignore it.
