Heart attack has become a common disease these days, but do you know that most of the cases can be genetic, if someone in your family has had a heart attack, then this risk can increase for you too. Let us know from Dr. Bimal Chhajer (Former Consultant - AIIMS and Director Saaol Heart Center, New Delhi) whether this disease is genetic in most cases of heart attack? Or are there other reasons for it.

Dr. Bimal Chhajer told that heart attack occurs when there is a blockage in the blood vessels going to the heart, due to which the heart does not get proper oxygen. This blockage can happen due to many reasons, such as high cholesterol, smoking, stress and bad lifestyle, but if someone in your family has had heart problems, then its risk increases for you.

Cholesterol levels in the body can increase rapidly due to genetic reasons. Apart from this, diseases like blood pressure and diabetes can also affect you genetically, which increases the risk of heart attack.

Reason-

  • 1. Family History: If your parents or close relatives have had a heart attack, it could be an alarm for you.
  • 2. Heart problems at a young age: If a family member has had a heart attack before the age of 50, it could be a genetic reason.
  • 3. Abnormalities in blood test: If your cholesterol or blood pressure levels are found to be high in routine check-up, do not ignore it.

Prevention-

1. Get regular checkups done: Get your blood pressure, cholesterol and sugar checked regularly.

2. Adopt a healthy lifestyle: Exercise daily, eat a healthy diet and avoid smoking and alcohol.

3. Remove stress: Try to reduce stress through meditation and yoga.

4. Doctor Consultation – If you have a family history, keep consulting your doctor regularly.

Heart attack disease may be genetic, but it can be prevented. With the right lifestyle, timely checkup and precautions, you can avoid this serious disease. If you feel any symptoms, do not take it lightly and consult a doctor.
