What is a Chocolate Cyst: A chocolate cyst, also known as endometrioma, is a type of ovarian cyst. In this, tissue similar to the lining of the uterus starts growing on the ovary. This tissue thickens and bleeds during periods, causing a thick chocolate-like substance to accumulate inside the ovary. That is why it is called a chocolate cyst.
Causes of chocolate cysts
- Spread of endometrial tissue: A piece of the uterine lining reaches the ovaries through the fallopian tubes and starts growing there.
- Blood flow: During menstruation, blood enters the ovaries and gets trapped there, forming a chalky substance.
- Immune system problems: In some women, the immune system is unable to destroy this extra tissue.
