Speaking to the media in the Murshidabad district, Banerjee also raised concerns about the CBI investigation in the particular case. “I am not pleased with this… All people demanded capitol punishments were disappointed and the court implemented life inprisonment instead,” Mamata Banerjee’s initial statement after the Sealdah court’s judgement.
Hours after the Sealdah court sentenced the accused in the RG Kar rape and murder case to life in prison for the rest of their days, Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee had an issue with the sentences, unattended in the court. If the charge was with them, they would have made a point to get a death sentence. Banerjee added the particular case of the on duty doctor rape and murder was in the Trinamool dispensation; it was deliberately taken out by the Trinamool dispensation. While in Murshidabad District speaking to the journalists, Banerjee raised the question of the CBI investigation of the case. ‘I am not satisfied… all of us demanded the death sentence but the court awarded him life imprisonment,” Banerjee said moments after hearing the verdict from the Sealdah court.
“Case was forcibly taken from us. Had it weapon the (Kolkata) police we would have ensured that he was served a death sentence,” she noted, “All of us had demanded the death sentence but the court has given life imprisonment till death,” she claimed.
“Like many others, we also do not know how the probe was done. I am not satisfied. In many other similar cases which state police investigated, death sentence was ensured,” she reiterated.
The death of a 34 years old doctor due to brutal rape on August 9 sparked outrage against Mamata Banerjee owned Trinamool Congress. There were flags raised of a cover up involving prominent officials sitting in the state government. As a result, the Supreme Court ordered the CBI to take over this case which has caused public unrest across the nation.
