It was observed in an interview that Pres. Trump had publically commented that he formally received a letter from Pres. Obama and that they letters exchanged were indeed very polite and friendly. This was noted by me on my visit to Trump’s office when he at the time was preparing a “very nice letter” in response to the one left his by Obama, “very nice indeed.”
Let me share this delightful letter Dear Mr. Trump: Initiating the phrase “As I am discharging…US PRESIDENTIAL LETTERS”. I do remove within this envelope between thick sheets, under some formal obligations seriously attach great importance to the content which is indeed brief. I strongly believe that you and members of your family will in no time adjust hopefully correctly…… January 22 trump.
When prompted about the letter, Trump responded that he was uncertain at first. Trump remarked, “He may have,” as he gestured towards the white envelope labeled, “47.”
Letter Details Disclosed
The letter started with the phrase “Your Excellency, President Trump,” added with a warm greeting. The importance of the Presidency was underlined, stating, "The American people - and people all over the world - look to this house for steadiness in the inevitable storms of history.” Biden continued to express his wishes for the nation and claimed, “My prayer is that in the coming years will be a time of prosperity, peace, and grace for our nation.” The letter was signed by “Joe Biden” on the 20th of January, 2025.
Trump's Thoughts About the Letter
On Tuesday, Trump had more to say about the letter. In his words, “It was inspirational – positive.” He offered a compliment to Biden by saying, "It was a little bit of an inspirational type letter. Enjoy it, do a good job. Important, very important." Trump, for his part, put forward the significance of the letter in the words, “It was a positive, for him, in writing it. I appreciated the letter.”

A Presidential Tradition
This practice started with Ronald Reagan leaving a note for George H.W Bush in 1989. He was the first president to do so, and has set the bar for his successors. It has since then been practiced by every president in the history of America. Bill Clinton, George W Bush, Barack Obama, trump, etc. continue the tradition
Biden had already brought up the letter that Trump had left him in 2021. He described it as "very generous," but did go into details beyond that, calling it private.
A Unique Exchange of Letters
This conversation marks the beginning of an equally remarkable moment. No other president has both succeeded, and served as a successor to the same president like Biden. This made him one of a kind. There is great significance in the fact that correspondence began between Trump and the first president to serve non consecutive terms since Grover Cleveland.
Context and Responses
The letter laments the gravity and the exceptional on-going nature of the situation. The Guardian placed emphasis on these signals in gauging bridging transitions and stress their symbolic importance. Interpretatively, regardless of the political divide, Biden’s comments reveal his commitment to a certain way of life and coexistence.
Both leaders understood the importance of the exercise. Analysts pointed out that such letters do serve a purpose: they remind the signatories of their common obligations and the permanence of the office.
