For decades, Bollywood’s association with the underworld was an open secret. At one point, powerful dons not only financed films but also influenced casting decisions. Stars were often forced into uncomfortable and risky situations under threats or manipulation.

Madhuri Dixit: A Star Who Refused to Bow Down

Among those who bravely stood their ground was Madhuri Dixit, one of the biggest names in Hindi cinema. Despite the immense influence and intimidation tactics of the underworld, Madhuri resisted pressure from Anees Ibrahim, brother of Dawood Ibrahim, the notorious gangster behind several criminal operations, including drug trafficking and extortion.

As Madhuri’s popularity soared in the 1990s, she attracted unwanted attention from Anees Ibrahim. He was known to call Bollywood heroines to perform at private parties in Dubai, often sending them lavish gifts as bait. However, Madhuri repeatedly refused his invitations, even when the pressure intensified.

A Deadly Threat Against Madhuri Dixit

According to senior journalist Jitendra Dixit, who shared the story in a recent podcast, Anees Ibrahim planned to murder Madhuri after she defied his demands. This shocking revelation was made during an interview with retired police officer Avinash Dharmadhikari, who played a key role in ensuring her safety.

The Crime Branch intercepted the threat, recognizing the seriousness of the situation. Security was increased around the actress, and she eventually moved abroad temporarily for her safety.

Underworld’s Grip on Bollywood

The 1990s saw several Bollywood figures linked to the underworld, either willingly or under duress. Many celebrities were reportedly forced to perform at parties hosted by dons or follow their instructions out of fear. While some gave in, Madhuri Dixit's refusal became a rare act of defiance in an era of fear and silence.

How Madhuri’s Life Was Saved

Jitendra Dixit detailed that it was Dharmadhikari’s timely intervention that foiled Anees Ibrahim’s plan. The Crime Branch maintained surveillance and protection, ensuring no harm came to the actress. Madhuri's firm stance and courage in the face of such danger turned her into a symbol of resistance against criminal exploitation in Bollywood.
