Brisbane: Jasprit Bumrah and Akash Deep's fiery tenth wicket partnership helped India draw the match against Australia in the rain-affected third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series at Gabba on Wednesday. After the third Test between India and Australia was drawn, both the teams are currently tied 1-1 in the five-match Test series. After the Gabba Test was drawn, the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 qualification race has become exciting.
After the no result in the third Test, the WTC points percentage (PCT) of both India and Australia has declined. India has 55.88 percent and Australia has 58.89 percent. India is third in the World Test Championship (WTC) table.
Meanwhile, South Africa's team is leading the WTC points table with 63.33 PCT. Australia and India now have to play the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne from December 26. After this, both the teams have to play the fifth and final match of the five-match Test series in Sydney early next year.
How will India reach the WTC Final after the Gabba Test is drawn
India now has only two Test matches left in the current WTC cycle. In such a situation, it seems very difficult for India to reach the WTC final.
Team India is third in the WTC points table after South Africa and Australia with 55.88 PCT. To overtake both of them, India now has to win both the Test matches to be held in Melbourne and Sydney at all costs. However, any other result will leave their fate to other results to reach the final to be held at Lord's.
If India loses one of the remaining two Tests of the series, the team will have to depend on Sri Lanka defeating Australia 2-0.
South Africa's impressive win over Sri Lanka at Gqebarha has made them favourites to make the final. With a PCT of over 60 per cent, they need just one win from the remaining two Tests against Pakistan to secure a place in the WTC final. Even if they lose both matches, they will still remain favourites unless India pull off a miraculous 3-1 series win in Australia.
Australia, which is in second place, will travel to Sri Lanka for two Tests. A 2-0 series win will ensure their place in the final, provided India loses in either Melbourne or Sydney. The equation for India to reach the final is now challenging.
