Former fast bowler Mitchell Johnson believes that Australia should drop out-of-form Marnus Labuschagne from the playing XI for the day-night Adelaide Test against India starting on December 6.
Labuschagne scored two runs off 52 balls in the first innings of the first Test match played in Perth and three runs off five balls in the second innings. Australia had to face a crushing defeat of 295 runs in this match.
Johnson wrote in his column in 'Nightly' that Marnus Labuschagne has been struggling to score runs for a long time and another player should be fielded in his place in the second Test match in Adelaide. This does not mean that anyone was made a scapegoat for the crushing defeat in the first Test match.
Mitchell Johnson said that dropping him from the Test team will give him a chance to play some Sheffield Shield matches and club cricket and he will not be under the pressure of playing for the country. I think Labuschagne will benefit from playing domestic cricket instead of facing Jasprit Bumrah and his fellow bowlers.
In the last 10 Test innings, he has reached double figures only once. He may be struggling to stay at the crease. But it is not working right now. Labuschagne's ouster will not mean that his future in Test cricket is in limbo or that he is not the right player to bat at number three.
Why did Johnson speak on Steve Smith?
Mitchell Johnson said that Steve Smith's form is a matter of serious concern. It seems that he has lost his shine which we are used to. He is not able to play the balls coming on his pads. Whereas in the past he used to score runs easily on such balls. Australia's Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne have failed miserably in the first test.
