Defending champions Australia overcame a difficult situation to beat Sri Lanka by six wickets in their first match of the Women's T20 World Cup campaign here on Saturday. Australia restricted Sri Lanka to 93 for seven, thanks to the brilliant bowling of fast bowler Megan Shute.

Chasing a modest target of 94 runs to win, Australia was reduced to 35 for three at the end of the powerplay. Captain Alyssa Healy (04), Georgia Wareham (03), and Ellyse Perry (17) lost their wickets early.

Australia won the match with 34 balls to spare thanks to a 43-run partnership between opener Beth Mooney (43 not out) and Ashleigh Gardner (12). The team scored 94 runs for four wickets in 14.2 overs. Sri Lanka, who came to bat first, had to struggle a lot. For them, Neelakshika Silva was the top scorer by scoring 29 runs. The entire team could only score 93 runs for seven wickets in 20 overs.

Only four fours were hit in Sri Lanka's entire innings. Megan Shut took three wickets for 12 runs and also equaled South Africa's Shabnam Ismail's record of taking 43 wickets in all stages of the T20 World Cup.
