Shardul Thakur County Championship: Indian all-rounder Shardul Thakur has signed with Essex County Cricket Club to participate in England's prestigious County Championship. The announcement was made on February 18, 2025, while Shardul was representing Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy semi-final against Vidarbha.

This will mark Thakur’s debut in the County Championship, where he is set to play the first seven matches of the season for Essex. The tournament is scheduled to commence on April 4, 2025, just two weeks after the Indian Premier League (IPL 2025) begins on March 22. Despite going unsold in the IPL 2025 mega auction, Thakur has been in outstanding form for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy, strengthening his case for national selection.

Excited for the Essex Opportunity – Shardul Thakur

Expressing his enthusiasm about joining Essex, Thakur said, "I am thrilled to be part of Essex this summer. It’s an exciting challenge and an opportunity I have been looking forward to. Playing County cricket is an experience I have always wanted, and I’m happy to represent the Eagles."

In the ongoing Ranji Trophy season, Thakur has made a significant impact, amassing 439 runs and claiming 34 wickets at an impressive average of 21.67. His consistent performances have put him in the spotlight, especially with India’s upcoming tour of England in June, where the team will play a five-Test series through June, July, and August.

Essex’s Director of Cricket Welcomes Thakur

Chris Silverwood, Essex’s Director of Cricket, expressed his delight at securing Thakur’s services. He remarked, "We are extremely pleased to have Shardul on board. Our priority was to bring in a high-quality fast bowler who could contribute with the bat as well. Shardul fits that role perfectly, and we eagerly await his arrival at Essex."

Eyes Set on an Indian Team Comeback

Following Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy quarter-final, Thakur reaffirmed his ambition to reclaim a spot in the Indian team. He stated, "Yes, absolutely. I believe I am in contention for selection. My goal is to solidify my place in the team and get picked. Right now, I’m focused on Ranji Trophy, but international cricket remains the ultimate level we all aspire to reach. The drive and passion to play for India never fade."

Thakur last featured in a Test match for India against South Africa in December 2023. As he continues to impress in domestic cricket and prepares for his County Championship stint, he will be vying for a spot in the Indian squad as a fast-bowling all-rounder, competing with Nitish Kumar Reddy for a place in the national setup.
