Sonica Muraleedharan, Senior HR Manager for the domestic business of Larsen & Toubro (L & T), used LinkedIn to address the controversy that was stirred by the Chairman Managing Director of the company S. N. Subrahmanyan comments regarding the long working hours. His statements on the possibility of having a work week of 90 hours or greater have generated a significant amount of debate recently and in social media as well with a number of industry leaders sharing their opinions against it too.

While doing a thorough post, Sonica while took to the social media was angry over the fact that Subrahmanyan’s statements were taken out of context and were interpreted differently, making people irrationally take offense to it. She elucidated that during the internal meeting where the comments in focus were made, Subrahmanyan was not at any point in time talking about or advocating a 90 hour work week. In fact even this statement is casually made and it is not intended to be an instruction. Sonica underscored that the controversy in question does not reflect his leadership style which Sonica said was nurturing, participatory and caring for the employees.

She said, “It is extremely unfortunate to witness how, the words of our MD and Chairman, S.N. Subrahmanyan (SNS), are taken out of context resulting in misunderstandings and unwarranted criticism. Being a party to the internal address, I can categorically say that SNS did not endorse or direct people to work for 90 hours a week. His comments were more of personal comments rather than instructions and they have been taken out of context which has created a problem that doesn’t really bother him.”
