Union Law and Justice Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal reiterated on Saturday that the central government is determined to implement the 'One Country, One Election' system. He made this statement while inaugurating the new academic section of a private university in Jaipur, Rajasthan.

Lok Sabha and Assembly Elections Were Previously Held Together

Meghwal emphasized that conducting simultaneous Lok Sabha and Assembly elections is not a new concept. He pointed out that in 1952, 1957, 1962, and 1967, elections for both Lok Sabha and state assemblies were conducted simultaneously. According to him, implementing this system once again is in the national interest, ensuring better governance and stability.

‘One Country, One Election’ Approved by High-Level Committees

The minister highlighted that the proposal for simultaneous elections has received approvals from multiple authoritative bodies. He mentioned that:

  • The Election Commission has reviewed and supported the concept.
  • Various committees and the Niti Aayog have assessed its feasibility.
  • A high-level committee chaired by former President Ram Nath Kovind has also endorsed it.
  • The Union Cabinet has officially approved the initiative.

Additionally, Meghwal stated that the bill has been introduced in the Lok Sabha and is currently being reviewed by the Joint Parliamentary Committee, with discussions being held with various social organizations.

Some Parties Engage in Appeasement Politics – Meghwal

On the sidelines of the event, Meghwal responded to a media query regarding political opposition. He stated that certain parties practice appeasement politics, contrasting it with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s approach, which, according to him, focuses on public satisfaction rather than appeasement.
