Ma Anand Sheela, born Sheela Ambalal Patel, also known as Sheela Birnsteel, became widely known for her close association with spiritual leader Rajneesh, also called Osho. She served as his personal secretary and spokesperson for the Rajneesh movement. During the 1980s, she played a key role in managing the Rajneeshpuram commune in Wasco County, Oregon, USA.
Although she spent years deeply devoted to Osho, her story gained new attention in recent years. Now, her life is being adapted into a Bollywood biopic, with actress Alia Bhatt taking the lead role. Originally, the project was planned by director Shakun Batra, but it stalled due to funding issues.
Netflix Revived Interest in Her Story
Ma Anand Sheela's life became widely known again after Netflix released the documentary Wild Wild Country in 2018. The series focused on Osho’s life and his commune in the United States, highlighting Sheela’s controversial role.
Following the documentary's success, Netflix released another film titled Searching for Sheela, which further explored her personal experiences and relationship with Osho. This documentary was also directed by Shakun Batra.
Relationship with Osho
Sheela met Osho through her father, who introduced her to an Indian ashram. Over time, she became one of his most trusted aides. In a recent interview during the Humans of Humanity event, she spoke about their relationship, describing it as deeply emotional but not physical. She recalled moments of sharing poetry and watching films like Umrao Jaan together.
Legal Troubles and Imprisonment
In 1984, Sheela was accused of leading a bioterror attack in The Dalles, Oregon, where 751 people were poisoned in local restaurants. The attack aimed to influence a local election. This incident is considered the most serious bioterrorist act in U.S. history.
She was later convicted and sentenced to 20 years in federal prison. However, due to good behavior, she was released after serving just three years. Osho also supported the allegations against her at the time, though Sheela continued to express love and respect for him.
Personal Life and Relationships
Sheela was married three times. Her first husband, Mark Harris Silverman, passed away in 1980. She then married John Shelfer, another follower of Osho. After his death, she was in a relationship with Urs Birnstill, who died in 1992. She also had an adopted daughter, Anuja, and named her business “Anuja Impex” in her honor.
