The National Centre for the Performing Arts – Mumbai is presenting a three-day festival called Spectrum Dance Festival. This year’s festivity is planned for February 7, 16, and 28. It will include the Indian styles of dance with and put a twist on it by incorporating the style from around the world.

The festival starts with a Bharatanatyam solo by Vaibhav Arekar, titled Naama Mhane… that derives its themes from the poetry of spiritualist-saint Namdev. Also on same night, there is a TANUSREE SHANKAR DANCE COMPANY that presents Indian production NRITYAVYVIDHYAM based on roots of utilization of contemporary elements in the storyline. Being part of NCPA Nrityagurukul, promoted by Voltas Ltd under its CSR policy, the enactments are styled by Arekar and Mohapatra.

For its show of novelty, the Luxemburg’s As We Are (AWA) company will perform the Shoot the Cameraman – a show that is viewed as transforming the role of a cameraman to that of an observer. The concluding act will also involve two special performances; Odissi performer Sujata Mohapatra will take the stage and present her enchanting persona next will be a Kathak and Flamenco fusion by Aditi Bhagwat and Bettina Castano respectively who have incorporated movements of both the styles.

This is an exploration of history and progress with new ideals in dance to which a nod of approval has been given by Dr. Swapnokalpa Dasgupta, the Head of Dance Programming at NCPA. In its first example, it portrays how male dancers retelling spiritual poetry in Bharatanatyam illustrates the evolution of the art form of dance; in the second one, a camera actually becomes an essential prop of a performance video; and in the last example it presents how Kathak and Flamenco combined in a rhythmical dance format is an evidence of the innovation of creativity in presenting this art.
