Tokyo: Japan New PM: Japan has got a new Prime Minister. Shigeru Ishiba will be sworn in as Prime Minister next week. 67-year-old Shigeru has taken control of the Liberal Democratic Party. His scandal-ridden party LDP has secured a majority in the lower house. The next session of Parliament will be convened in October, in which Shigeru will take over as PM. Last month, Japan's current PM Fumio Kishida announced his withdrawal from the LDP leadership election.
Experienced Leader
Ishiga, a former banker, entered parliament in 1986 and emerged as a strong leader of the party. He has also been the defense minister. The Liberal Democratic Party is a conservative party that has ruled Japan almost continuously since the party's founding in 1955. Ishiba had been trying to win this election in the party for five times. Ishiba said, ADP can now gain the trust of the people. Now it will be reborn.
What will the policies be?
Ishiba has promised a full exit from the country's high inflation rates and vowed to achieve real wage increases. He has also promised to work to reduce reliance on nuclear power in favor of renewable energy and called for an Asian version of the NATO security bloc to counter threats from China and North Korea.
Close Combat
Let us tell you that a total of 9 leaders including two women were in the fray in this party election but Shigeru defeated his nearest rival Economic Security Minister Sane Takaichi. Shigeru got 215 votes and Sane got 194. If Takaichi had won the election, she would have become Japan's first woman PM. Shinjiro Koizumi, son of popular former Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, was the third candidate who could not make it to the final cut.
