If you’ve booked a confirmed train ticket under your name but are unable to travel, Indian Railways allows you to transfer your ticket to a family member. This ensures the reserved seat does not go to waste. However, specific rules and procedures must be followed to make the transfer valid.
Eligible Family Members for Ticket Transfer
According to Indian Railways' rules, you can transfer your confirmed reservation ticket to the following relatives:
Spouse (Husband/Wife)
Children (Son/Daughter)
Parents (Father/Mother)
Siblings (Brother/Sister)
Note: The ticket transfer is only allowed within the immediate family.
Deadline to Request a Ticket Transfer
You must submit the transfer request at least 24 hours before the train’s scheduled departure. Requests made within 24 hours of the train’s departure will not be accepted.
Step-by-Step Process to Transfer a Train Ticket
Visit the nearest railway reservation counter.
Carry the following documents:
Printout of the electronic reservation slip
Photo ID mentioned on the ticket
Valid ID proof of the family member travelling
Proof of relationship with the relative
Submit a written application requesting the ticket transfer.
Railway officials will verify the documents and process the name change.
Ticket Transfer for Special Categories
Indian Railways also allows ticket transfers in the following cases:
Government Employees: If the employee is on duty and submits a proper authority letter, the ticket can be transferred.
Educational Institutions: If a recognized educational institution sends a written request 48 hours before the train’s departure, the reservation made in the name of one student can be transferred to another student.
