The Indian cricket team has successfully secured a spot in the semi-finals of the Champions Trophy. However, before heading into the knockout stage, they have one last league match against New Zealand. While fans are excited, there is some concern within the team regarding the fitness of captain Rohit Sharma and vice-captain Shubman Gill. With two days left for the match, hopes remain high that both players will be fit in time.
Rohit Sharma Skips Net Practice
India is set to face New Zealand on Sunday, March 2, and both teams are in full preparation mode. However, during Wednesday’s practice session in Dubai, Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill were noticeably absent from the nets.
According to a report by Cricbuzz, Team India trained under lights at the ICC Academy. While the rest of the team took part in the session, Shubman Gill stayed away from the field. As for Rohit Sharma, he is still recovering from a hamstring injury sustained during the match against Pakistan. Though he is making progress, he is yet to fully regain match fitness. So far, the BCCI has not issued any official statement on his condition.
Rohit Sharma Taking Precautions
Despite skipping net practice, Rohit was present with the team, observing the players during their batting and bowling drills. His reluctance to step onto the field is reportedly a precautionary measure to prevent aggravating his injury.
Although Rohit didn't score big against Pakistan, his quick start helped set the tone for India's victory. With a crucial semi-final scheduled for March 4, the team management might prefer to rest him for the upcoming match against New Zealand to ensure he is fully fit for the knockout stage.
Shubman Gill’s Health Concerns
Shubman Gill is also not in the best shape, though his condition isn’t serious. Reports suggest he is dealing with a minor health issue, which should improve in the next couple of days.
Given the circumstances, there is a possibility that either Rohit Sharma or Shubman Gill (or even both) might be rested for the match against New Zealand. Since India has already qualified for the semi-finals, this game holds little significance. Instead, the focus will be on ensuring the team is at full strength for the high-stakes semi-final on March 4.
