Sydney: Indian Test and ODI captain Rohit Sharma, who has been struggling with poor form for some time, has finally broken his silence regarding retirement. He completely rejected the news of retirement and said that he is not just playing this match (Sydney Test) and he has not retired yet.

Rohit's statement has come at a time when news about his retirement has been going viral on social media for the last several days. Many experts had talked about his retirement and at the same time claims were being made about it in many reports.

The opening batsman said that he is not going anywhere and the reason for 'staying out' from the Sydney Test against Australia was poor form. Rohit, who is struggling with poor form, has taken rest from the Sydney Test and fast bowler Jaspreet Bumrah is captaining in his place. This has led to speculation about Rohit's future in Test cricket.

Rohit told the official broadcaster, "I have not retired, I have distanced myself from this Test. It was a difficult decision but a wise decision. I took this decision after coming to Sydney. Others cannot judge us. Runs are not being scored, but there is no guarantee that you will not be able to score runs in the future. I am impressed with Bumrah's captaincy. I am not going anywhere. I am out of this match because I am not in form."

Rohit Sharma said, people who speak on the mic and do calculations on paper cannot decide my career as to how long someone has to play and for how long who has to captain.

37-year-old Rohit said that the team management and selectors supported his decision. He said, "I wanted to tell the coach and selectors that this is going on in my mind. They supported my decision. They said that you have been playing for so many years and you know what you are doing."

Rohit said, "It was a difficult decision for me. But if we look at everything, it was a logical decision. I will not think too far ahead."

In Rohit's absence, Shubman Gill was included in the Indian team. India is trailing 1-2 in the series and to retain the Border Gavaskar Trophy, it will have to win the Sydney Test at any cost.

Rohit scored only 619 runs in 26 innings of 14 matches in Test cricket in 2024. Before the Sydney Test, he has been able to score only 31 runs in five innings of three Tests of this series. Rohit's bold decision has led to speculation that he may say goodbye to Test cricket after this series.

However, he said, "This is not a decision to retire. I am not going to quit the game. There is no such decision. I am out of this match only because my bat is not working. But there is no guarantee that the bat will not work even after five months. There is no guarantee that the bat will not work even after two months or six months."

Rohit said, “We have seen a lot in Test cricket. Life changes every minute, every second, every day. I believe that circumstances will change. But we also have to be realistic. If a person has a mic, laptop or pen, what he writes or speaks, it does not change our life. We have been playing for so many years.”

He said, "These people cannot decide when we should go or when we should not play. I am a sensible person and mature too. I am a father of two children, so I also have some brain about what I want in life."

When asked if he took this decision after the defeat in the Melbourne Test, Rohit said, "No. I took this decision after coming to Sydney. After the match, we had only two days in between and one day was New Year and I did not want to say this to the coach and selector in the New Year."

He said, "But it was going on in my mind that I am constantly trying but runs are not being scored. I have to accept that runs are not being scored and in such a situation it was necessary for me to step aside. Whenever I am captaining, I do not think about what will happen after five or six months. It is important to focus on what you want in the near future."
