The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has initiated five pilot projects to test hydrogen fuel-based vehicles under the National Green Hydrogen Mission. A total of 37 hydrogen-fueled vehicles, including buses and trucks, will be deployed for testing across 10 different routes in India.
According to an official statement, these projects have been allocated to leading companies such as Tata Motors Ltd., Reliance Industries Ltd., NTPC, ANERT, Ashok Leyland, HPCL, BPCL, and IOCL.
National Green Hydrogen Mission: Key Developments
The government aims to assess the viability of hydrogen-powered vehicles in public and commercial transport. Under this initiative, the ministry had previously issued guidelines for implementing hydrogen pilot projects in the transport sector and invited proposals for different vehicle types, routes, and hydrogen refueling stations.
After a detailed evaluation, the government approved five pilot projects, covering 37 hydrogen vehicles (buses and trucks) and the establishment of nine hydrogen fueling stations.
Government Financial Support of Rs 208 Crore
To support these pilot projects, the central government has allocated Rs 208 crore in financial assistance. The projects are expected to become operational within 18 to 24 months, laying the foundation for a wider adoption of hydrogen fuel technology in India.
A key objective of the National Green Hydrogen Mission is to gradually integrate green hydrogen fuel into the transport sector, starting with buses and trucks on a pilot basis. This initiative is expected to accelerate the country's shift towards clean energy and sustainable mobility.
