Dr Manmohan Singh: Dr Manmohan Singh was born on 26 September 1932 in a village in pre-partition Punjab. After passing the matriculation examination from Punjab University in 1948, he pursued his education at Cambridge and Oxford Universities. He received a first class degree in economics from Cambridge and a D.Phil. from Oxford in 1962. His book “India's Export Trends and Prospects for Self-Sustained Growth” offered a new perspective on India's trade policy.

Educational and administrative career

Dr. Singh taught at Punjab University and Delhi School of Economics. In 1971, he joined the Government of India and became an economic advisor in the Ministry of Commerce. After this, he held many important positions like Chief Economic Advisor in the Finance Ministry and Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission. He was also the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India and Chairman of the University Grants Commission.
