New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has become active again in Delhi where they have not held power since 1998. They won three seats in the 2015 Assembly elections and increased their tally to eight in the 2020 elections, and now appear poised to capture the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) bastion in the 2025 elections, as per the current counting trends of the Indian Election Commission (ECI).
What is the status of the eight assembly segments where BJP emerged victorious in 2020?
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) garnered 62 out of the 70 seats in the 2020 elections, easily winning and maintaining control over Delhi. But BJP was able to take eight constituencies which include the following: Rohini, Gandhi Nagar, Ghonda, Karawal Nagar, Laxmi Nagar, Mustafabad, Rohtas Nagar, and Vishwas Nagar. Congress did not win any seats.
Nevertheless, since that time, and especially following the resignation and subsequent disqualification of several AAP MLAs, the political scenario of Delhi has changed massively. BJP has also seen a decrease in its strength to seven after the departure of BJP MLA Ramvir Singh Bidhuri whose election to the Parliament in 2024 resulted in him resigning.
The 2023 ECI elections seems like a walk in the park for the BJP candidates winning the elections of 2020. Currently, all seats are predicted to go the BJP way - a total of 8.
In the Rohini Constituency, Pardeep Mittal from AAP suffered a defeat against Vijender Gupta of the BJP who won with a difference of 20520 votes.
